mycroftismight: What is this?!

This is a thing I saw when I was walking the path to the River of Souls (that’s a literal translation of the name, dramatic right) in Pirenópolis, Brazil (the city/village I was staying in).

It just looks like it came directly from a Miyazaki movie.

These creatures that look like “caterpillars” are actually the larvae of Sawflies (Perreyia sp.), which are in the insect order Hymenoptera (which also includes ants, wasps, and bees). The larvae of some species in this genus sometimes moves along the forest floor as a mass, feeding on fallen leaves. It is not well understood why they do this. They are found in a few countries in the Amazon Basin of South America.

Videos of these have been going around the internet for awhile without identification or an explanation in English. I thought I’d provide one again, in brief :3
