Alien Topographies Emerge in New Red Sea Coral Photos

Last time we checked in with Alexander Semenov, head diver at the White Sea Biological Station in the Russian Arctic, he was wowing us with stunning photographs of jellyfish and parasites.
Equivalent wonder is found in his latest photographs of corals. Semenov’s series on the Red Sea reef-builders is ongoing and this is the first time the images have been published. Doubling down on the eye-candy, we are also sharing his recent photographs of starfish (images 14-22).
If you recall, photography isn’t even an official part of his job description, but with Behance, Flickr and his personal blog and website Semenov has been sharing the discoveries of his isolated, chilly, sub-aqua government job with the world.
Semenov’s early appraisal of his coral photographs is that they resemble the surfaces of distant alien planets. What do you think?
