The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Amazilia tzacatl, breeds from east-central Mexico through Central America to northern South America. It is abundant in open country, near river banks and forest edges, and it is also a frequent visitor of gardens. These little birds aggressively defend nectar sources in their feeding territories, often using a diving flight to chase away butterflies, bees, and other hummingbirds.
