Whooping Crane (Grus americana), Endangered… Migrating to Texas, wintering in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Main features: tallest North American bird, mostly white, red face, black wingtips. Diet: crustaceans, fish, variety of plants, insects. Wingspan: 229cm, length: 150 cm. Fun Fact: An attempt was made by conservationists to restore Whooping Crane populations by grouping them with Sandhill Crane populations. Unfortunately, this attempt failed as young Whooping Cranes tried to mate with Sandhill cranes. No hybrids were begotten. The experiment was given up shortly after.
